What is ONERO™?
ONERO™ is a specialised, high-intensity resistance and impact exercise program aimed at strengthening bones and muscles. Designed specifically for individuals with low bone mass, ONERO™ requires supervision by an accredited practitioner—such as a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist—to ensure safe and effective delivery.
Research Background
ONERO™ is an evidence-based program that originated from the LIFTMOR study conducted at Griffith University under the guidance of Professor Belinda Beck. The study, and two others published in the Journal of Bone Mineral Research (2018, 2020, 2021), demonstrated the effectiveness of high-intensity exercise in improving bone health.
Since 2015, ONERO™ has been implemented at The Bone Clinic, and many ONERO™ licensees. Data collected from clinic patients aligns with the LIFTMOR study’s results, showing significant improvements in bone mass, posture, and fall reduction. Notably, 86% of patients increased bone mass in the lumbar spine, and 69% saw improvements in hip bone mass. These findings were presented at the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research’s annual scientific meeting in 2018.
The ONERO™ Difference
While many types of exercise provide benefits for bone and muscle health, low-intensity exercise is often not enough to significantly build bone mass. ONERO™ distinguishes itself by employing high-intensity loading exercises, which have been proven to be both safe and effective for individuals with low bone density, as long as they are properly supervised.
In contrast to the risks associated with unsupervised high-intensity training, ONERO™ ensures that injuries, especially in older adults with fragile bones, are rare due to the oversight of qualified practitioners.
Benefits of ONERO™ Training
- Increases bone mass: Higher-intensity exercises have been shown to be more effective at increasing bone density, particularly at the spine and hip.
- Improves posture: Strengthening muscle and bone helps maintain proper posture, reducing the risk of falls and fractures.
- Reduces risk of injury: Proper supervision ensures the safe execution of exercises, minimizing injury risk for those with low bone mass.
Safety First: The Importance of Supervision
Although exercise is universally beneficial, not all forms are suitable for individuals with low bone mass. The risks of unsupervised or improperly executed exercises can be high for this group, potentially leading to fractures or other injuries. Therefore, bone-specific exercises like those in the ONERO™ program must be carefully tailored and supervised by accredited professionals to ensure the highest level of safety and effectiveness.
Quote from Belinda Beck, Lead Researcher:
“When it comes to our bones, the research tells us not all exercise is equal. In fact, exercise that is targeted, supervised, and focuses on resistance and impact training is best.”
